OFFICIAL CAVS PRESS RELEASE – KYRIE IRVING NAMED EASTERN CONFERENCE ALL-STAR
IRVING TO MAKE THIRD STRAIGHT
NBA ALL-STAR GAME APPEARANCE
CLEVELAND, OH – Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving has been named an NBA Eastern Conference All-Star, the league announced tonight on TNT. The voting for reserves was done by the Eastern Conference head coaches.
The 6-3 guard will make his third All-Star appearance, while becoming the fourth-youngest player in NBA history to be selected three times (LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Isiah Thomas). In his first two All-Star outings, he has averaged 23.0 points on .714 (20-28) shooting from the field, a .500 (6-12) mark from beyond the arc, 4.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists in 29.5 minutes.
Irving started for the East in last year’s All-Star Game and took home MVP honors after finishing with a team-high 31 points on 14-17 (.824) shooting from the field, including 3-6 (.500) from the three-point line, a game-high 14 assists and five rebounds in 34 minutes. After leading the East to a 163-155 win in New Orleans, he became the second-youngest player to win the event’s MVP award (LeBron James) and the first player to tally at least 31 points and 14 assists. Irving was also just the second player in All-Star Game history to record more than 10 field goals and 10 assists in a single game (Dwyane Wade in 2010) and his 24 points in the second half tied Glen Rice (1997) for the most points scored in a in a single half in All-Star history.
Irving will join Cavaliers forward LeBron James on the Eastern Conference All-Star team, marking the seventh time in franchise history that at least two Cavs players will appear in the event (1972, 1989, 1992, 1993, 2005, 2009).
In 44 games (all starts) in 2014-15, Irving is averaging 22.1 points (12th in NBA), 3.1 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.6 steals (14th in NBA) in 38.1 minutes per game. He is the highest scoring point guard in the Eastern Conference, registering at least 20 points on 27 occasions this season, including eight 30-point outings. In last night’s 99-94 win over Portland, Irving set a career high, Quicken Loans Arena record and NBA season high with 55 points, while also establishing a new franchise record with 11 three-pointers made.
The 64th NBA All-Star Game, which will air live on TNT and ESPN Radio in the U.S. and will be seen by fans in 215 countries and territories and heard in 47 languages, will be played at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday, February 15.
